24 Oct FOR PARENTS WITH CHILDREN WHO ARE ADDICTED
FREE help for parents looking for drugs counselling or addiction therapy in Singapore. It is a
difficult journey for people who are addicted to drugs or alcohol to get into recovery and be
clean and sober. What is often missed is that it is also painful for their friends and family to be a
part of the process as well. Parents with children, teens or adults, that struggle with addiction
also need support and care as well. This can also be found in addictions counselling in
Singapore. Parents with children addicted need support too. Many things can provide parents with support.
HOW TO HELP YOURSELF WHEN YOUR CHILD IS STRUGGLING WITH ADDICTION
Here are some suggestions for ways to act and tips to help yourself, while your child gets the
help they need whether that be drugs counselling or other types of addiction therapy in Singapore
such as alcohol, gambling and most recently social media and gaming
1. REMEMBER COMPASSION AND LOVE
This may be hard for some, as people who use drugs and alcohol are prone to doing things that
hurt others, this includes parents. Reminding both yourself and your child that you love and care
for them can go a long way towards strengthening the relationship. This does not mean you
approve of their drug use or past behavior. It just means that you still want the best for them, and
want to be a part of their clean and sober life.
2. SET CLEAR BOUNDARIES WITH THEM
One thing that happens often when someone is on drugs is that they stop caring about others, just
drugs, That means they may say or do things they would not normally do. Parents are often at
their limit, and cannot take anymore when a child gets addictions counselling. With that in mind,
think about what is ok, and not ok for you anymore. Are they able to live with you still? Will you
lend them money? What requirements about treatment follow through do you have? Those are all
important things to think about and set up with them beforehand.
3. ENCOURAGE THEIR POSITIVE STEPS
While they can and should be held accountable for their mistakes, they should also be praised for
their progress. Encourage this, and remind them of all the successes they have had. This might be
a time for bonding, but also it might just be the motivation they need to keep going, or just stay
sober for that one day.
4. YOU MUST REMEMBER TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR SELF IN ALL THIS
Addictions treatment is a long process, and just by virtue of having a child struggling with drug
use, you are a part of it now. It can mean a lot of change and energy that you have to put out in
order to support your loved one. That means you need to take a little time for yourself here as
well. Know when you are feeling exhausted and unable to go on so that you can rest or do
something enjoyable for yourself. Take a walk, read a book, watch a movie, or whatever it is that
makes you feel joy and relief. You will need this break. Also remember to take care of the
basics, like making sure you are eating properly and getting enough sleep. Sometimes under
stress, people forget the basic things.
WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO UNDERSTAND MORE ABOUT ADDICTION?
One last thing to think about. Addictions counselling is not just for a person with an addiction. It
can be used to help a family understand the problem better, and learn how to cope on their own.
They often become a lot stronger together in the process. This can help you as well.
Loved ones often feel helpless and hurt having to watch their family members go through a cycle
of addiction and recovery. Some tips and techniques can help you and your child in this process.
Remember your love for them, but setting clear boundaries will help. Encourage them, but do not
forget yourself in this process. Above all, addictions treatment in Singapore can help parents and
other family members as well. The key is to seek help immediately before things get any worse.
